05 | The Tree of Life
04 | The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
03 | Super 8
02 | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
01 | Contagion
Strangely enough, I still haven’t seen Contagion. Whatever. Let’s get my 2012 list started!
35 | Red Dawn (November 2)
Director: Dan Bradley
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Adrianne Palicki (TYRA COLLETTE), Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan
I think this movie actually made my list last year, but here’s to hoping that it will be released this year. The original 1984 movie was a snoozefest, but I’m looking forward to this one mostly because of the cast.
Piranha 3DD (February 17) 21 Jump Street (March 16) Beauty and the Beast 3D (January 13) Vamps (TBA) 30 | The Woman in Black (February 3)
Director: James Watkins
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer
This movie has a trailer that is legitimately creepy, and I’m excited to see Dan Rad’s post-Potter career. If you compare his work in, let’s say Potter 3 to Potter 8, it’s really extraordinary how much he’s grown as an actor. Plus, I’m just really rooting for the actor, who was named EW’s Entertainer of the Year.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (June 22) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14) John Carter (March 9) Skyfall (November 9) 25 | The Five-Year Engagement (April 27)
Director: Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall)
Cast: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Mindy Kaling, Jacki Weaver
I’m a big fan of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and it will be great to see Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel reunite for this movie… about a couple who has a five-year engagement. Hilarity ensues! Plus, who doesn’t love Emily Blunt?
Stoker (TBA) Kathryn Bigelow Untitled International Thriller (December 19) Nero Fiddled (Summer 2012) Lincoln (December 2012) 20 | Wettest County (April 20)
Director: John Hillcoat (The Road)
Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Mia Wasikowska
Based on the book “The Wettest County in the World,” and apparently it’s about bootleggers. Lots of old-timey costumes! Plus, John Hillcoat (The Road) is a talented guy, and look at that cast.
The Master (TBA) Argo (September 14) Smashed (TBA) Gangster Squad (October 19) 15 | Looper (September 28)
Director: Rian Johnson (Brick)
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Bruce Willis, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo
“A killer who works for the mob of the future recognizes one of his targets as his future self.” Okay, I’m there. I’m also a fan of Rian Johnson’s 2005 debut Brick, which also starred JGL.
Untitled Diablo Cody Project (TBA) The Cabin the Woods (April 13) The Amazing Spider-Man (July 4) Welcome to People (TBA) 10 | Only God Forgives (TBA)
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive)
Cast: Ryan Gosling (Ronny Brosling), Kristin Scott Thomas
Can I compare Nicolas Winding Refn & Ryan Gosling to Scorsese & DeNiro? Okay, good. Plus, last year was the Year of Gosling and I don’t see his streak ending anytime soon. Also… it’s about Thai boxing.
Django Unchained (December 25) The Perks of Being a Wallflower (TBA) Brave (June 22) The Avengers (May 4) 05 | This Is 40 (December 21)
Director: Judd Apatow
Cast: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Megan Fox (yup), Jason Segel, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Albert Brooks, John Lithgow
Pete and Debbie from Knocked Up get a spin-off! Those two were seriously the best thing about that movie anyway. Also… liking Megan Fox as a comedy actress is the new ironically liking Megan Fox. Also part 2: I’m definitely tagging this post with “megan fox” to get more hits.
04 | Gravity (November 21)
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Cast: George Clooney, Sandra Bullock
This movie has been in development for years, and the female role in the movie was one of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood earlier this year. Basically, a stranded female astronaut tries to return to Earth. Apparently there’s very little dialogue. Alfonso Cuarón (Potter 3, Children of Men) is perfect in every way.
03 | Prometheus (June 8)
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Logan Marshall-Green (TREY ATWOOD), Guy Pearce
Cast + director = blah blah blah yes please. Plus, it’s written by Damon Lindelof, who was a showrunner on Lost. Is this an Alien prequel? Time will tell.
02 | The Hunger Games (March 23)
Director: Gary Ross
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks
Based on the hit book series, and if you haven’t heard about it by now then shame on you. I was skeptical of this movie from the beginning, but then the first full trailer arrived, and DAMN. This looks great. Count me in for the midnight premiere.
01 | The Dark Knight Rises (July 20)
Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Josh Pence
Zero explanation required.
***END LIST***
And so it is. Some other movies I’m going to see: This Means War (February 17), Magic Mike (June 29), The Great Gatsby (Christmas Day), The Bourne Legacy (August 3), Project X (March 2).
2012′s going to be the Year of Tom Hardy (Wettest County, The Dark Knight Rises, This Means War, Kathryn Bigelow Untitled International Thriller), the Year that Jessica Chastain Is Offered Every Female Role for Every Movie in Development, the Year that Jeremy Renner becomes a superstar (The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters), the Year that M83 Is in Used in Every Movie Trailer and the Year that People get sick of 3D re-releases (Beauty and the Beast, Titanic, Finding Nemo, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace). Bring it on.
What are you looking forward to?
EDIT (1/2/2012): HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT FUN SIZE (OCTOBER 12)? Josh Schwartz for life.
